Lyrics
Sunlight streaming in through the café window
Made you reach up to shade your eyes
When your hand just gently caught your hair
Pushing it back and to my surprise
A patch of blue was on the side of your face
A sign that told me something was wrong
And pulled away the veil from the secret
You'd kept hidden for so long
We all find it hard to escape
From prisons we build out of our shame
Hiding the pain that we suffer
While giving ourselves all the blame
You began to pour your heart out
With tears in your eyes, you said "let's leave"
You forgot your coat, so we had to go back
Then you pinned your heart to your sleeve
"No idea when this started
Been heading downhill for so long"
You thought you'd brought it on yourself
And, now, couldn't tell right from wrong
We all find it hard to escape
From prisons we build out of our shame
Hiding the pain that we suffer
While giving ourselves all the blame
You knew you had to make the break
We planned how you would steal away
Took your things to a friend's house
There was no time to delay
Started your life over again
Grabbed every chance there was to take
Settled down with somebody new
Who said they will never make your heart ache
We all find it hard to escape
From prisons we build out of our shame
Hiding the pain that we suffer
While giving ourselves all the blame
We all find it hard to escape
We all find it hard to escape
We all find it hard to escape
